How can a theatrical artist justify in today’s cultural, political, and socioeconomic climate, fulfilling a role traditionally defined solely as “entertainer”? “Entertainer” of the educated, well-groomed, upper-class, largely white masses; “entertainer” of the privileged; “entertainer” of the socially and politically powerful. How can theatre, especially considering its current mass patron base, be/become a culturally responsible force? I think that without answering these questions we will not be able to keep theatre at all alive in the west…

The goal of every artist should be to confront her work head on and distill its exploration into something that first resembles and then challenges the very human impulse it has sprung from. How do we put ideas on the stage that connect viscerally with our masses?
